Safety probe follows hostel blaze

17/05/2008 2:08:19 PM
A fire safety officer is investigating Brisbane's Palace backpackers hostel to see if the building meets safety requirements following a fire overnight.A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said more than 150 backpackers were evacuated from the city hostel on Edward street when the blaze broke out about 3.30am (AEST).The spokesman said the blaze broke out in the roof area which was partially damaged. The spokesman said no one was injured in the blaze and alarms had notified authorities. He said a fire safety officer would routinely be investigating the blaze and filing a report early next week. Fire investigators suspect the roof-top fire could have been caused by an electrical fault or discarded cigarette."There is security footage of the area so we are confident that we will be able to pin point the cause of the fire," fireman Kevin Devitt told brisbanetimes.com.au."Fire investigators and a community audit officer are currently on the scene."Mr Devitt said backpackers were able to return to their rooms around 5:30am.Meanwhile, police are investigating a fire which caused extensive damage to a factory on Brisbane's northside overnight.Emergency services were called to the Crockford Street factory at Northgate just after midnight today, to find the building engulfed in flames. The building, which housed a LED lighting and auto electrical business, suffered serious structural damage as a result of the fire.Scientific officers will examine the scene to determine the cause of the fire once the area has been declared safe.In other news, police have charged a 48-year-old Moorooka man with five counts of arson and one charge of attempted fraud.Police said the charges relate to the $5 million fire at Auto Pro Store, a golf shop, at Moorooka in March. The man will appear in Brisbane's Magistrate's Court today. Anyone with information about the overnight fires is urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. AAP
