DONNYBROOK’S disappointing start to the season continued with a loss to Collie at home on Sunday.
The Dons started off strongly before going down by 34 pts.
The team seemed to be in control for the first term with goals to Joel Coad, Stephen Clifford and Lyndon Muir while Collie registered only two goals and a succession of behinds to be marginally trailing at the first break.
The game tightened up in the second quarter with one goal off the boot of Donnybrook’s Campbell Nettleton before three majors from the Eagles had them just in front at the main break.
What should have been a even 2nd half did not eventuate as Collie kicked away to a 29 pt lead after a five goal to two third term.
Donnybrook were stuck playing catch up footy in the final quarter.
Although having more shots on goal they did not improve their position as turnovers disrupted many forward moves.
Overall another disappointing four quarter effort with only a few brief burst of good teamwork from regular contributors and the highlight of Matt Horton’s strong presence and good judgment through the centre and Luke Skehan’s legwork and persistence around the ground.
Donnybrook will have to string more passages of clean possessions together to have a realistic chance as they tackle HBL Lions on their turf this weekend with the game being played on Saturday night.
