SW Highway one of riskiest in State

26/06/2008 11:53:00 AM
SOUTH Western Highway is one of the riskiest roads in the State, according to the RAC.

In a recent list compiled by the RAC, WA motorists have named the road at the worst for safety in the South West.

It is also named as the worst in regional WA and the fourth worst in the entire State.

RAC Executive Manager of Member Advocacy David Moir said as a major linking road to the region, the South Western Highway should not be one of the State’s worst roads.

“Motorists are saying the South Western Highway is sub-standard and the State Government needs to do something about this,” Mr Moir said.

“It has a number of dangerous curves and crests as well as narrow lanes or roadways.

“Something needs to be done to fix this, as well as other roads across the State, to make the entire road network safer for all drivers.”

The RAC received 560 nominations in its Risky Roads campaign identifying a total of 288 roads, one third of which were in regional areas.

According to motorists, the worst areas of the South Western Highway are in the Manjimup and Dardanup areas.

The South West towns and areas with the most nominated sections of roads were Manjimup, Augusta-Margaret River and Busselton, followed by Dardanup and Bunbury.

Road works have recently been carried out in some of the riskier areas of the highway around Donnybrook and between Donnybrook and Balingup.
